Beth Blackford jokes, “I don’t carry a piece with me so the only thing I could hit him with is my purse.” Elgin Police say if you run into a robbery in progress just do what the guy says.

Western Carteret Fire & EMS Department Chief Kevin Hunter gave the presentation at the department and noted there is no need or request for a tax change in the departments district for the coming fiscal year. The current tax rate is 4 cents per $100 of assessed value for the fire district and 3 cents for the EMS district. The department serves Cedar Point, Cape Carteret, Peletier and Bogue and provides mutual aid to neighboring fire departments around and over the county line. The community is growing and as the commercial and residential population increases that will help offset the need for a tax rate increase as we move forward, said Chief Hunter. He said the proposed $1,723,300 budget has seen some departmental increases compared to the current fiscal year, but in several other areas there have been drastic decreases, including a 25 percent decrease for insurance compared to the current budget. Some of the proposed increases for fiscal 2015-16 include: A roughly $33,000 increase for employee salary raises based on above satisfactory performance evaluations. This would bring the entire compensation department up to a suggested $1,005,831.
