CD Corporation only makes up a small portion of barge traffic in Winona; the local shipping business is still dominated by grain. As the last barges of the season chugged out of Winona’s harbor late last week and ice formed on the locks and dams of the upper Mississippi River, overall barge traffic was up modestly this year. Last year, 2013, was Winona’s slowest barge season in over a decade; only 722 barges moved through Winona. This year, barge traffic rebounded, with 804 barges as of the end of October, though the final tally is still likely to fall short of the ten-year average: 1,066. A bountiful grain harvest, prolonged spring flooding, low water in the summer, and an early end to the shipping season last week, made the 2014 season a mixed bag for barge shippers. “Business was obviously up this year compared to last year with the crop being much better,” said CHS Interim Terminal Manager Brian Brauch. Last year, a wet spring prevented local farmers from planting numerous acres of corn, and demand from area ethanol plants drove up the price of the small harvest beyond what barge loaders like the CHS terminal could afford.

Volunteers found the front door of the home wide open. This has been a community project for us and a lot of people have put a lot of hours into it, said Budd. It more upsetting for them that somebody would steal from the organization and not realize where theyre stealing from. Once the thieves got inside they stole a brand new refrigerator and dryer. Its money well have to raise again and unfortunately instead of it going to this build or future build its going to tools and fixing damage, Budd added.
